Travel By Photo – Orchid Garden Kuala Lumpur
I love travel. I love photography. I’m not sure whether I love travel because of photography or I love photography because of travel. đ At least for this case, I visited this tourists hotspot in Kuala Lumpur because I wish to shoot some nice photos for my portfolio at istockphoto. It is the Kuala Lumpur Orchid Garden.
Kuala Lumpur Orchid Garden is located on top of a small hill in our famous Lake Garden or Taman Tasik Perdana. It is easily accessible by either taking a taxi or you can just park your car at the Kuala Lumpur Bird Park just opposite it. Established in mid of 80’s, this orchid garden showcases various types of orchid species found in the tropical region, all within an area of 1 hectare in size.
Orchid flower belongs to the family of Orchidacae and there are about 50,000 species of orchid all over the world. Their large varieties are especially apparent in the tropical countries, like in Malaysia.
Unfortunately, KL Orchid Garden can somehow easy to be overlooked due to its extremely small entrance with no proper (I mean attractive…) gate or signboard.
Beside the gate was one rather small signboard describing its concept and the structure of the garden.
Since the garden is at hill top, visitors have to walk up a concrete pathway to its ticketing counter. The concrete imprint pavement is quite nice though.
… and it is quite long before you can reach the ticketing counter. I paid RM1 entrance fees as it was weekend. Other than weekend, entrance is FREE!
After paying for the ticket, I needed to go further up hill to a central pergola. Here is where the gardening starts.
You can start seeing varieties of orchid flowers being planted along the pathway. Let me take my first photo of red orchid… đ
At the centre of the pergola, there is a nicely constructed steps leading up to the hill top, another section of the garden.
Nice feel right? On the right wing, there is a huge pergola sheltering orchid plants on both side of the pedestrian walkway. You can spot a tourist couple enjoying the serene environment around the garden in the above photo.
It created a totally different impact in terms of composition with the pergola included in the same photo above…
On the left wing, there is a curvy walkway under another pergola….
Again, kneeing down to capture a different perspective view of the pathway…
Another species of white orchid. It rained in that morning so some natural rain drops could still be spotted.
It’s not orchids, it’s Paradise Bird, acts as hoarding surrounding the hill top.
Going up to the top, the hill top garden has a collection of hybrid orchids with some of them are named after their founders.
Nice destination with greeneries and water in the midst of the busiest city of Malaysia.
Pots of orchids in different species could be seen along the way.
More orchids collection could only be found in these shops… for sale! đ
These are the orchid nursery where you can pick and buy orchid in pots. Price? Reasonable… đ
A shot to the far end….
A wild shot on a group of purple orchids isolating from background with selective focus on the one in front…
Close up shot of an orchid duo…
If you can spot it out, there is a caterpillar on top of the yellow orchid above.
Not only orchids, the rockery lanscapes along the side pathway is also catchy to my eyes.
There is also a lotus pond here with water lilies next to the pergola.
Very good luck to me, those water lilies were all grown to its optimum. I’ve shot more than 20 photos on them. Some selected water lily photos were featured in my istockphoto’s portfolio.
Another attraction featured there in the KL Orchid Garden is this big bowl fountain.
In case I missed something, while on my way out, I took another photo of those pots of orchid species.
From where I came in, to where I’m going out…
The long pathway again…

Though it’s quite filled up with varieties of orchid (though I don’t think there are all here…), I still think the Botanic Garden in Putrajaya, our new government administrative district, is very much bigger with more varieties of flowers not only orchids. Nevertheless, for RM1 entrance fees (weekday is FREE!), Kuala Lumpur Orchid Garden is still worth for travellers to pay a visit. Wow you gave a photographic tour of the Orchid Garden. Beautiful lily photo.
I often visit the Orchid Garden for photoshoot and each time I am there, I end up with different images of the orchids on display. I was there for the 4th time about two weeks ago and there were prize winning orchids on display. I had quite a field day with many wonderful photos of the orchids. I only realized there were purple lilies that day but didn’t shoot them as there were a group of guys hogging the spot with tripods.
Thanks for your tips on the wine đ

- September 15, 2009These are beautiful photos.
In the tropics they grow so well. I remember someone telling me that left over beer on orchids is really good for them because of the sugar.
Not so much luck growing them down here in the Sunshine Coast although we have some gorgeous sub-tropical plants in our botanical gardens.
Great use of the lighting in your shots. Look forward to more.
