London, England may be one of the most expensive cities in the world to visit but there are some “must-sees” for every traveler and many of them are free or under a tenner (that’s a 10-pound note for the un-Brits among us!)
- A cruise along the Regent Canal on a sunny day is such a pleasant way to travel. You can grab a boat ride at either end, Little Venice (near the Warwick Avenue tube) or down at Camden Lock.
- The Courtauld Gallery is a wonderful, small museum at the top of The Strand with an impressive collection of impressionistic art. At five-pounds, you get more than your money’s worth on this ticket.
- The Changing of the Guard – most folks would stay in central London and watch this at Buckingham Palace but I much prefer to take an hour train ride to Windsor, just outside London. It’s a smaller town with a palace open to the public and the Guard is much more photo-accessible there. The r/t train fare from Waterloo station is under 10 pounds, off peak.
- Walk through Portobello Road Market in Notting Hill on Saturday mornings early – there is plenty to look at and it’s free. However, if you skew younger, as in the 18-30 set, then head over to Camden Lock for a colorful market open most days, with lots of great eateries in the area.
- London is an excellent walking town, if not one of the best in the world. So get out and walk, even if a solo traveler, and start your journey from the north side of London Bridge near The Tower of London. Walk along the waterfront until you reach Tower Bridge and then cross the Bridge to the south side, where you will find a museum at the top of the bridge and amazing views up and down the river. There are beautiful parks on either side to sit and take in the scenery.
I hope you enjoy London as much as I do. Tah!
