Top 5 Things I Can’t Miss To Do In Rome
There are way more than 5 things every visitor can do in Rome. During my previous and first visit to Rome, I’ve done quite some exploration to the city. Sight seeing of those sculptures and statues, arts and architectures, eating the authentic Italian pizzas, trying out the original gelato, sitting on one of the Spanish steps in the evening are among those things that every 1st time travelers must do and every traveler is dreaming to do in Rome.
I’m revisiting Rome this May for the 2nd time and this would be my second chance (hopefully not the last π ) to do what I’ve missed to do before! Apart from being a tour leader for a group of 5 avid travelers who haven’t been to Rome, I’ll strive to also recover my long lost memory of Rome experience and to fulfill my desire in travel to do what I shouldn’t have missed in my first visit to the city. I have a thought over and have listed out these Top 5 things I can’t miss to do in Rome this May! What you think it would be?
- See in person a masterpiece of artwork on the ceiling in Sistine Chapel of Vatican. You bet it is ‘The Creation of Adam‘ by my most favorite ancient Italian sculptor, Michelangelo. A ceiling painting measuring 4800mm x 2300mm in the chapel, this masterpiece is part of the series of work illustrating the bible story of God giving life to Adam which was completed in year 1511. It is also one of the most famous and later artwork by Michelangelo. I’ve missed to go into the chapel in my previous visit to Rome and I would not miss to go to the chapel this time!
- Sip a cup of Italian specialty coffee in Antico Caffe Greco in Rome. It is the most famous and the oldest cafe in Rome which was started way back in 1760. Too famous with its fantastic coffee and beautiful ancien Italian interior decoration, and too many historical icons including ancient sculptors Bertel Thorvaldsen, writers Stendhal, Goethe and poet Byron been there before. It is still the most well known hang out place for writers, politicians and artists nowadays. Though its long operation hour from 9AM until 7:30PM, one could still find it difficult to look for a vacant seat there whole day especially during peak hours. I missed it before because of this reason. So what I’ve done and what you should do? Look for an accommodation in Rome which is nearer to the caffe or Spanish Steps so you can go there as many times as you like and possible! π
- Throw a coin into the Trevi Fountain. Haha, perhaps it is not encouraged by the many but still many tourists are doing it everyday. Reportedly more than 3,000 Euros are being thrown into the fountain each day!! Traditional legend saying if someone throws a coin backward into the pond with his or her back facing the fountain, he or she will go back to Rome one day! I want to go back to Rome one day so I have to throw it again! π
- Visit the Borghese Gallery. Established in 1902, Borghese Gallery houses a substantial part of the Borghese collection of paintings, sculpture and antiquities includes my favorite Venus Victrix sculpture (I just love Roman sculptures). It is also one of the museums in Rome with entrance fees and advance booking required. This was why I didn’t go in my 1st visit. Why I’m going this time round? Get a Rome Pass! It will grant us free entry to the first 2 sites. I choose this museum as well as Colleseum!
- What else? Taking lots of photos. Need me says more? I’m going to shoot endlessly in Rome (if weather permits) with my wide angle angle lens and D60 (Still? Why not? It’s super light for travel!)! I was still using film Nikon F70 when I first visited Rome. Being a student, films and processing costs were simply too high to deter me from taking more photos of the city. Not anymore! I’m using digital camera now and just a matter of GB and SDHC cards, I can now shoot whatever and whenever I want! Also because I really need some nice photos for this travel blog! π
These are my 5 things that I can’t miss to do in Rome this May. I’ve inserted into my Rome itinerary. What other things that you think I should not miss to do in Rome? How I wish I have the budget to travel to Rome π

Hey, Travel Feeder, if it’s the second time, try some Second Time delights…. The Bilotti Museum in the Villa Borghese park (instead of or in addition to the Borghese Museum), the Acqua Paola Fountain on the Gianicolo (instead of the crowds at the Trevi… unless you want to be at the Trevi at 5 a.m. – when we like it). And, MeiTeng – you CAN go to Rome on a budget… we do!
- March 22, 2010@Dianne,
Thanks for your advise. Is it really great to be at the Trevi at 5AM? I really want to know that and I don’t mind wake up earlier! π
@Mei Teng,
- March 22, 2010You will have the budget if you really want it! Just like me. Though we have to squeeze whatever cost possible… and cut short our journey.
You have nailed it here. I would love to go to Rome but one problem would be sussing out what to do. I think you have picked out 5 places to visit that you can’t miss if visiting Rome.
- March 22, 2010.-= Hotels in Loch Lomond´s last blog ..Chateaux & Hotels Collection 2010 =-.
Cecil – depends on what you like… during the day, crowds, crowds, crowds… people watching can be fun too. But at 5 a.m. you have it to yourself (except for on police car posted a ways from the fountain, with a couple police who could care less just sitting in the car) and it’s amazingly beautiful. A 5 a.m. trip to Trevi is perfect on jetlag time. Dianne (www.romethesecondtime.com)
- March 22, 2010The Sistine Chapel would be at the top of my list. Of course you’ll be standing shoulder to shoulder with the rest of the crowd. It’s a pick-pocket’s heaven so protect those pockets. I also enjoy visiting the Colosseum. Have fun!

Enjoy Rome in the open air… There is a lot of life in the streets of the center, especially during spring and summer when the temperatures are warm or hot… In my opinion it is one of the best ways to enjoy the city… Don’t stay always in some clubs, pubs, discos or indoors in general π
- March 24, 2010Hi Cecil,
i missed the chance to see the world famous art piece by Michelangelo. Its a super long q when i was there one of the Monday in Aug 2010.
- September 18, 2010I do wish that i can return to Sistine Chapel to enjoy this piece of Creation of Adam in Vatican City..
Wish there is a chance to follow u guys walk around enjoy the sight-seeing.
Shelby – next time, if you have an extra about $25, sign up for a tour of the Sistine Chapel. Even people who don’t like tours like getting ahead of the lines and into the places that should be targeted in the incredibly long Vatican museums. Several of our friends liked Angel Tours.
