Top 5 Reasons To Re-visit Langkawi Island
Hello there! I’m back! (‘Again? I thought you just came back from China?’) In case you are wondering why I was ‘Missing In Action’ again for the past few days, I travel to Langkawi Island, in my company getaway trip during the past Hari Raya Haji holidays he…he.. 🙂 . Thanks to my company, my wife and I have this chance to re-visit this infamous travel destination of northern Malaysia after a whole ten years! In a small group of 18 people, we took Air Asia straight to the Langkawi international airport for a 3 Days 2 Nights liquor drinking, seafood eating and duty-free shopping trip. 🙂
Pulau Langkawi or Langkawi island is the biggest island in Malaysia. It is one of the 99 island group of Langkawi Permata Kedah, the jewel of Kedah. It’s land area if combining all the 99 islands is around 530km², which is only slightly smaller than Singapore island. Pulau Langkawi is located some 30 km off the mainland coast of northern state of Kedah, Malaysia. The name Langkawi is a combination of “Lang” and “Kawi” which mean Red Eagle in native Malay words, as it used to be the habitate of these red Kawi eagles. It is also the famous origin of Langkawi white coloured marble in Malaysia. On June 1, 2007, Langkawi Island has been given a World Geopark status by UNESCO.
Thanks to our previous premier, Tun Dr. Mahathir, Langkawi has emerged as one of the fastest growing travel destination in Malaysia. It was then granted a duty-free status where even the locals love to go there to buy cheap liquors, beers and chocolates. Coincidentally, these development were all happened after the 7th generation of the local legend, Mahsuri’s curse to the island before she was stabbed to death being accused of unfaithful to her husband some 250 years ago. 🙁
Off course, there are always reasons for one to visit the island, and the top 5 reasons for me to re-visit this island are as simple as the following:
- It has been 10 years since I first visited Langkawi island in 1998 – Being one of the fastest growing travel destination of Malaysia, there are quite a lot of changes to the island, in terms of infrastructure and architectures. It is good to re-visit one travel destination like this island to update my travel experience;
- It has been 4 years since Tun Dr. M stepped down as premier – Being the pioneer of Langkawi’s development, his absense has also slowing down the development progress of the island which is quite noticeable and not much new development had launched for the past 2 years. The last tourist attraction was the harbour city and cable cars which was completed 2 years ago. Unfortunately, we were unable to ride the cable car up the mountain as it was too windy and raining. So, it would not be too early to visit it once more before anything would change;
- In conjunction with my wife’s birthday which is one day after the trip – Hope my wife wouldn’t mind to celebrate her birthday eve with all my collegues 🙂 which I think should be memorable with loads of duty free cheap beers in the island 🙂 ;
- Additional subjects for my travel blog, as well as lots of nice scenes for my Lumix to shoot at – It’s always unresistable for a photo maniac like me to join such a trip where multiple scenes such as beaches, wildlives, historic architechture and underwater lives are available in front of my eyes, and
- Nothing much I would complain since it was a free trip from my company – Though we bought thoses duty-free stuffs as much as the trip costed!
Unfortunately, it was rainny seasons nowadays and during our 3 days stay in the island, the weather was unfriendly at all to my camera as it rained for 2 days 🙁 – Travel Feeder.
Hey!. I think you could also make more of it through a bigger exposure about \”Reasons To Re-visit Langkawi Island\”. Perhaps you can have some chocolates delivered melbourne.
- February 6, 2009Hi,
We had the same thing back in 2009. We visited Langkawi in September during rainy season. We had 4 straight days of massive rainfall. The weather was so bad that we couldn’t even leave the resort. Streets were flooded and taxi drivers didn’t dare to bring us someplace nice. We also couldn’t drive a motorbike (what we normally do). I made a movie of it; so you can the flooding at Telaga Harbor: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=V5J3zkRQag4
Luckily; we too decided to head back there this January 2011. We had an amazing time; 5 days of sun :). Explored the whole island my motorbike; we had a fantastic time. Hope your next visit will be better too :).
