Top 5 Motivations To Buy Nikon D60 As My Second Camera For Travel
Hooray! ‘We wish you a Merry Christmas, we wish you a Merry Christmas, we wish you a Merry Christmas and a happy New Yeeeeaaar’ …. Once again I wish all readers Merry Christmas and a happy New Year 2009! This year I had a wonderful Christmas, not the BBQ turkey we had, not the 5 bottles of red wines we had (a mixture of French, Chilean and Australian, Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot… Yucks! 🙁 ), not even those Dannemann Moods cigars, BUT the Christmas present that I bought for myself, a Nikon D60 DSLR! Though I bought it a week ago and took a few shots, I purposely packed it back and unpacked it on the Boxing Day! What a feeling!! 🙂
As I mentioned earlier, I’m already a happy owner of Panasonic Lumix FZ28. I brought it along as my travel camera on my Shanghai vacation and have captured some beautiful photos of my trip. It is no doubt a perfect camera for travel (Read my Top 5 ‘Wow’ Factors about FZ28 here). So, what is the motivation for me to buy another camera for travel, albeit it is bigger, heavier than Panasonic with the same amount of pixels but more expensive? Here are the top 5:-
- My children are growing up and they are extremely active and energetic – Babies look different every day. Though my son, Dylan is 15 months old now, I love to capture those special moments of him when he runs, plays and laughs. More to say, I couldn’t expect him to pose for me standstill. I need to react fast and so do I need a faster camera. My Panasonic Lumix, being the nature and characteristics of a compact camera with a small light sensor, doesn’t serve very well in this department;
- I love potraits and my 2 children – Potraits are always my favorite section of photography. When I realised DSLR could capture sharper and better defined face of my children, it has become my biggest motivation to get a DSLR;
- My best friend ‘motivated’ me a lot – He owns 2 Nikons, D60 and D90, and plenty of lenses. I could always borrow his 18-270mm zoom lense if I need to. I’ve been poisoned by this devil a lot. 🙁 ;
- To be a motivation to travel even more! – Naturally, when you buy a new camera, you would think of whatever reasons to visit more places than before and the same ‘chicken and egg’ philosophy applies. Either travelling a lot so motivated to get a camera or, got a new camera so motivated to travel, are the same to me, and
- The price of DSLR has dropped tremendously – They have a price tag similarly to an advanced compact, like Canon G10. Nikon D40 is selling even cheaper than some compacts! Recent price drop of Nikon D60 to RM1800.00 has motivated me to getting it fast, before it’s being replaced and repriced.
With the above strong motivation pushing behind me, though it was only less than 3 months after I bought the Panasonic FZ28, I decided to buy a second camera for my travel. With the priority of taking fast action children movement and nice potrait, I chose DSLR. With my past experience of owning both Nikon and Canon film SLR, I chose Nikon. For its lightest weight among other DSLR in the market (better to my shoulder during vacation travel), I chose D60. With the recent economic down turn, I chose to pay by credit card… 🙁 – Travel Feeder.
I’m a big Nikon fan too! My D80 can do just about anything and gave us such great photos on our Utah trip last summer.
- December 30, 2008Have fun!!
I see! Yes I read that you gonna get a second camera but didn’t know that your Genting pics are produced by Nikon D60. Cool leh! RM 1800 means around S$900, er… 🙁 how about Lumix? Sigh.. seems like now I am used to DSLR as the picture quality is really much better than digital camera. But what I like about digital camera is it’s lighter, smaller and easier to handle for me.

- January 28, 2009Hi there interesting post about your Lumix FZ28 and Nikon D60. My Lumix broke down nearly a week ago. I’m looking for either a good PnS camera or a DSLR depending on my budget. I have eyes for Lumix FZ36 or FS20 and Nikon D60 or D90. Was wondering whether you bought your D60 at Selangor Photograher too? Do you know how much they are selling for D90?
- February 12, 2009> Che-Cheh,
- February 12, 2009Hi there! Sad to know that your Lumix has broken down. Great to know you’re going to get a new camera! Yes. I bought my D60 from Selangor Photographer as well but I’m not too sure how much they are selling for D90… My friend bought one 2 months ago for RM3.5k Body only. For D90 kit, I think should be around RM4k now… 🙂
How much did you bought your D60? I’m thinking about that one. Did you buy any lens at the same time?
- February 12, 2009> Che-Cheh,
- February 12, 2009You are about right. I bought D60 for RM1,875.00, at Selangor Photography, Pertama Complex. This price included D60 body with 18-55mm kit zoom lense which was a bargain at that time! IMHO, kit lense would b sufficient. It is equivalent to 4X zoom for compact’s. You could always upgrade to other lense in future. Off course, AFS lense is much more expensive than AFD, about double the price. Unless you focus manually with AFD lense which D60 has a rangefinder to assist.
Cecil, I call them out… I got RM1950. I think it would be enough too. I’m just a beginner. Thanks for your advice. 🙂
- February 12, 2009>Che-Cheh,
- February 13, 2009Don’t forget to ask for those free stuffs along your purchase mate! I got bag, standard size tripod, 4GB SDHC, cleaning tool set, screen protector and UV filter when I got mine! Cheers!
Cecil, okay thanks! wow that’s quite a lot. They said no free gifts when I asked yesterday. 🙁
- February 13, 2009just wondering if fz28 is better choice for indoor and ourdoor shots then d60 for the money,. 250 dollat difference and loads more zoom for fz28,.
- April 7, 2009Looks like the D60 is quite a good investment photography-wise.. will take your recommendations into consideration
Thanks

I have always enjoyed my travels till the core but a few of them only hold memories I didn’t care for the means to preserve those wonderful memories that were worth cherishing forever. Now I realized the importance and have bought a Nikon D60 , it is just the piece I needed to make my trip a complete power pack.
- November 8, 2010I bought a Nikon D60 last week, this is my third camera. And I loved the features it possesses. My kid is never stable, and I always have to try a lot to click for him. I am so much relaxed after buying this,It captures with a really fine clarity, even the moving objects.
- November 11, 2010Soundds like a great camera, judging by the photos too. How does it do on power?
