The city of Toulouse in southwest France combines space-age technology with laid-back charm, serving up some of France’s greatest hits: history, culture, beautiful countryside, great food and great wine.
Here are the Top 5 Attractions in Toulouse…
- Pont Neuf. – The words mean “New Bridge,” but there’s nothing new about it. Pont Neuf was built in the 16th century but it’s kept its looks over the years. Stand on it and gaze at Toulouse’s domed skyline or sit on the riverbank at dusk, watching it change colour as the night lights come on.
- Canal du Midi. – This waterway forms part of the network that crosses the width of France to connect the Atlantic Ocean to the Mediterranean Sea. In summer, its walkways and cycle paths are flanked by fields of sunflowers and it’s a great place to get some fresh air.
- Les Abattoirs. – Formerly the abattoirs of the city, this striking building with overhead arches houses ever-changing displays of modern art. From the beautiful to the bizarre to the ridiculous, it’s definitely worth a visit.
- Place Capitole. – There’s nothing subtle about the central square in Toulouse. Marble columns stand outside the town hall and cafes, organic markets, rock concerts, skating rinks and more fill the square over the course of the year.
- Atmospheric Streets. – One of the best parts about a visit to Toulouse involves simply strolling around its quiet streets, taking in the independent artistic cafes, painted shutters and quirky museums. From Place Capitole, wander towards St Cyprien and see what you find…
