Top 5 attractive cities to visit in Switzerland
Switzerland is one of the most popular countries to visit in Europe. Located in central Europe and being surrounded by France, Italy, German and Austria, Switzerland is also a famous gateway for those travelers who wish to travel about Europe from North to South and East to West. Millions of tourists flock into Switzerland each year for its beautiful mountains and lakes. I love Switzerland for its glacier, landscapes and its superbly clean waters.
I’ve put together 5 of the best cities to visit in Switzerland that any traveler planning a trip there should not miss. Here is the list:
1) Lucerne – A beautiful city in central Switzerland features tremendous numbers of tourist attractions including the Lake Lucerne, Mt. Pilatus, Mt. Rigi, Chapel Bridge, art museum, the Old Town and many more. It is my favourite city of Switzerland as it combines the beautiful mountain, crystal clear river and lake, colourful landscape, authentic old town architectures into one single touristic package that making it an attractive Swiss city to visit and spend a week in.
2) Bern – The capital city of Switzerland and an UNESCO Heritage site, Bern is famous for its 4 miles long of road with shopping walkways both sides and the River Aare surrounding 3 sides of its old town. Along the main road, there are shops and cafes lining at both sides with numerous fountains with different designs at the centre of the road. Zytglogge mechanical clock tower at the city centre is perhaps the most iconic structure in Bern which represent the Swiss authenticity and art in time piece making.
3) Interlaken – A small little city being the gateway for travelers to visit nearby ski resorts and the Jungfraujoch of Bernese Oberland Alps in the central highland of Switzerland. Its name comes from the fact that it is in the middle of Lake of Thun (Thunersee) and Lake of Brienz (Brienzersee). Tourists come to here to enjoy the lake view but most importantly, to get to other highland towns such as Lauterbrunnen and Grindelwald to enjoy the magnificent views of nature. I just can’t forget the stunning scenery of the Alps.
4) Basel – One of Switzerland’s underrated tourist destinations, Basel has a beautiful medieval old town center, a Carnival that ranks with those of Venice and Rio de Janeiro, and several world class art museums built by architects like Renzo Piano, Mario Botta and Herzog & De Meuron. One of the reasons why it is one of the top cities to visit in Switzerland because it is the important gateway for traveling in between Germand, France and Switzerland as the Euroairport Basel-Mulhouse-Freiburg is the only tri-national airport in the world being shared by those 3 cities.
5) Zurich – The largest city in Switzerland and sometimes being confused with Bern as the capital city, Zurich is the central of transportation, financial, education and telecommunication of Switzerland. Contrary to the other cities mentioned above, Zurich is a lively city featuring all kinds of entertainment especially clubbing activities. That said, there are also other breathtaking scenery with lakes and mountains that nature and ski lovers will definitely fall for.
Switzerland was always my pick of the perfect travel destination, before losing out to Japan marginally recently mainly because of its extremely high living standard in the eyes of budget travelers. Otherwise, it is still one of my favourite countries to visit before we die. 🙂 – Travel Feeder
