The Beautiful Beaches of Tenerife

Tenerife, the largest of the Canary Islands, is famous for it’s volcanic origins, which lends the landscape its singular, lunar quality. The skyline dominated by the 3718m dormant volcano Teide (which is also the highest mountain in Spain), the landscape in Tenerife is a startling combination of barren rocky terrain and lush, fertile valleys of banana and tomato plantations.

Best of all, Tenerife is within easy reach from the UK. It’s a fair old heft, at nearly 3000 kilometres away from London, but it’s one of the most well-served routes, with hundreds of flights leaving every year, usually at cheap prices. Try onthebeach.co.uk for cheap holidays to Tenerife.

Once there, you’ll have your pick of excellent beaches. Tenerife’s rugged coastline is comprised of over 70 kilometres of fine, white sandy beaches. Let’s examine the best of Tenerife’s beaches…

Playa de las Americas is situated at the island’s south-easternmost point. Looking out over the beaches are shopping parades crammed with arts & craft shops, lively cocktail bars and restaurants, catering largely to families and honeymooning couples.

Playa de los Cristianos, boasts fine beaches of golden sand leading to crystalline waters. The lovely, picturesque fishing village alone makes a visit to Cristianos an essential part of any Tenerife holiday. All in all a stunning rendition of old Spain.

At the southernmost tip of the island, Playa de las Galletas is home to a few top-drawer hotels. It’s also renowned for its wide choice of sports facilities.

Playa de El Puertito is located near the old village of Guimar. Its beach is a visually arresting, 1.6 kilometre stretch of black sand. Not far is Playa del Roque, another black sand beach.

Playa de las Caletillas is a tourism hub, hugely popular with visitors from across the world. The three small bays are near Candelari which offers a more active nightlife than much of the island.

Close to the islands capital of Santa Cruz lie the beaches of Las Gaviotas. Another black sand area, what really marks these beaches out is the nudist policy – so be prepared! Further on up the coast is Las Teresitas (pictured). Golden sands and palm trees create the atmosphere of tropical glamour for which the Canary Islands are famed.

Costa Martianez in Puerto de la Cruz is notable for its large artificial pond. Known as Lago Martianez, the pond is one of the best examples of coastal landscape engineering, combining features of old Canarian architecture with original sculpture and vegetation. Created by Lanzarote’s most famous son, Cesar Manrique, it’s well worth a visit during your holiday to Tenerife.
