Reykjavik: Why Students Go To Iceland
My friends and I tend to have a spontaneous travelling steak, where we spin a globe, point our finger at it with our eyes shut and then vow to visit that mystery location. Well, the capital city Reykjavik in Iceland certainly offered us that sense of mystery. Our motley crew consisted of four university students. We were two girls and two boys on our little expedition to this island of inconvenient volcanoes and geysers.
We landed in the world’s most northern national capital and of course, travelling with two boys the first thing we had to do was eat. We went on a hunt through the huge amount of Reykjavik restaurants and stumbled upon what can only be described as a feast of seafood at the wonderful Við Tjörnina where we dared one of the lads to try the house specialty of marinated cod chins.
After we had satisfied our craving for Icelandic cuisine, we dragged the boys off to do some “cultural” sightseeing and wound up in the Saga Museum. We relived Icelandic history with the help of some creepy wax models and a backing track that certainly gave us the chills. The boys actually started to enjoy this “culture” whilst us two girls were enjoying the spectacular 360-degree view of the mountains from the viewing deck. Wandering about the city, we were amazed by the amount of music, art and history that was practically everywhere we looked. Saving the best till last and we found Hallgrímskirkja, one of the most incredible churches I have seen and that no one should miss on their trip to the city.
One thing can be said about Reykjavik, they certainly know how to throw a party! I have never been to a party pulsing with the kind of energy that the locals show. Dressed up and ready to cut loose the party started at 10 and seemed to never end. It was a wild night that we are all still struggling to remember.
Suitably tired the next morning, we split to find an Icelandic hangover cure. For the girls, we had a dip in the natural, chemical free waters of the Vesturbæjarlaug Geothermal Pool hot tubs whilst the boys enjoyed a fry up at Grái Kötturinn. We waved goodbye to one incredible weekend and next time, its going to be a week we’ll never forget rather than just a weekend. – Travel Feeder, your ultimate travel photo blog
