George Town Festival 2011, Penang, Malaysia
If you are traveling to Malaysia during this month of July, make sure you plan for a trip up north to Penang state, as Penang Island and its capital city of George Town is celebrating its 3rd anniversary of George Town Festival 2011!
Back to 3 years ago of today, on the 7th July of 2008, George Town, the capital city of Penang state, Malaysia, was inscribed into the UNESCO World Heritage site listing. To commemorate this special occasion, Penang State Government organized a month-long celebration in July on the next year called George Town Festival. Scheduled to be an annual event, the Festival is a feast of theatre, music, dance, film, art, opera, food, fashion, photography, and inspirational talks.
With the joint effort of the Penang State Government, Municipal Council of Penang Island, George Town World Heritage Incorporated, Penang Global Tourism and the various communities of Penang, The 2011 George Town Festival features more than 80 programmes in one month from 1st to 31st of July, with hope to promote arts and heritage of George Town and Penang to foreigners.
The 2010 Festival attracted an overall audience of over 600,000 people, and tourists from over 42 countries. This year the Festival is expected to draw audiences of over 1 million, both locally and regionally.
