A Little Goes A Long Way – Finding the Best PuPus on Oahu
Guest Post
The Spanish have tapas and the Chinese have dim sum, but where else in the world can you sample a myriad of local flavors in several small portions? Hawaii champions a diverse and delectable cuisine, and if you’re looking to dip into every aspect without having to break your wallet or loosen your belt, a PuPu platter is the only way to go. Though small in serving size, PuPus on Oahu pack a big punch when it comes to flavor, as the delicious meats, fish, vegetables and fruits combine to form an oasis at the buffet table. It is the perfect way to introduce yourself to the joys of poi, poke, or pua, or perhaps satisfy your tempura craving. With an island cocktail at the ready, a PuPu platter at your side, and the sun setting behind the Pacific, you’ll know what it means to truly revel in the Aloha Spirit. With this scenario in mind, we’ve assembled a list of the best platters on the island, which you can certainly put towards a PuPu tour of your own!
Uncle Bo’s Pupu Bar & Grill
If you’re hoping to stay within walking distance of the Best Western Honolulu and other Waikiki resorts, Uncle Bo’s is a great place to start. The PuPu menu is extensive and varied, with plenty of Japanese, Thai, and American dishes carrying the torch for their respective cuisines, many with an added Hawaiian tinge. Locals rave about the Dynamite Shrimp, while others sing the praises of the Kailua Pork fried rice. Whether you’re keen to kick back with some old favorites or are feeling a bit experimental, Uncle Bo’s won’t let you down.
House Without A Key
Made popular by an old Charlie Chan novel, House Without A Key is an island staple that has been serving delicious PuPus in a traditional Hawaiian setting for decades. While a bit more expensive than other places you might find, the quality and atmosphere will leave you satisfied in every way. Give the sashimi a whirl, order yourself a mai tai, and sit back and relax as the sweet sounds of Hawaiian music carry you into a dream-like state.
Duke’s
There’s nothing quite like looking out over the Pacific Ocean on a moonlit night. This scenario is only complemented by fantastic food, and Duke’s, which calls the shore of Waikiki Beach home, delivers the goods. With Diamond Head Crater a stone’s throw away, you can experience the beauty and serenity that has kept people coming back to this beach year after year. Try some of the Smoked Marlin Flatbread, or perhaps order up a couple of plates of fresh poke to enjoy while listening to live music.

This food looks delicious! Nice photos! Someday (hopefully), I will make a trip to the Hawaiian islands to feast on the good food, AND to take exquitie photos of the land. I have only taken photos of London and the southwest, but I am assuming these places do not compare to the islands! My photos can be seen here: http://www.markpauldaphoto.com. Save some PuPu for me, I will meet you there someday!
