A subdued 57th Malaysia Independence Day or Hari Merdeka
Happy 57th Malaysia Independence Day! 31st of August is the day when Malaysian proclaimed independence from the British colony in 1957. Better known as the Merdeka Day, all Malaysian used to be out on today each year to celebrate their independence. However, it is different this year.
Overshadowed by the recent tragedies of MH17 and the earlier MH370, we are looking at lesser celebration activities this year. No major celebration will be organised around KL and the usual Merdeka Day countdown and entertaining concerts on the eve had been cancelled in respect of the victims of both MAS flights. Roads and squares around cities were extraordinary quiet on the eve and no fireworks display was spotted at midnight.
The Merdeka Parade will still be carried on this morning at Merdeka Square, but in a subdued way. For visitors coming to Malaysia during this period, don’t be upset by the quiet Independence Day as we Malaysian are overcoming this despairing period.
While grieving all those tragedies happened in Malaysia this year, I hope we shall look forward to a brighter future in days to come.
