Devastating floods hit Prague and other central Europe cities badly
What had happened to Europe? Following the protest and demonstration in Turkey, devastating floods happening in central Europe currently has killed many people and made thousands of people homeless. Due to heavy rains and wet Spring season that caused Danube to overflow, Southern parts of Germany, Austria, Switzerland and the Czech Republic in central Europe are affected. At least twelve (12) people have been killed due to the torrential rain, which put much of central Europe on a state of high alert on Wednesday. Seven people were killed at the weekend in the Czech Republic, where the flooding was the worst in a decade, while 3 were killed in Germand and 2 in Austria.
According to BBC News, Waters from three swollen rivers gushed into the old town of Passau in southeast Germany, one of the worst-hit cities, pushing water levels to the highest they have been in 70 years. Much of the city was inaccessible on foot and the electricity supply was shut down as a precaution. Rescuers were using boats to evacuate residents from flooded parts of the city. With water from the Danube, Inn and Ilz rivers relentlessly pouring into the city, markers set in 1954, when the city suffered its worst flooding in living memory, have disappeared beneath the rising water.
The level of the River Elbe in the historic German city of Dresden, where at least 600 people were evacuated, is not expected to peak until Thursday morning. Meanwhile, the floods were receding in the south German city of Passau. People could be seen sweeping up muck from their streets.
In the Austrian city of Krems, emergency workers have been shoring up a dyke under threat from the swollen Danube. Thousands of people left their homes in the Czech Republic in recent days as floodwater threatened to overwhelm flood barriers.
The main rail link connecting Prague and Berlin in Germany has been underwater, with trains being diverted.
This is bad news to travelers who wish to visit Europe this coming days. Popular tourists including Prague and Dresden are badly hit by the flood. Itinerary needs to be changed to avoid areas around the Danube. 🙂 – Travel Feeder
