Travel snapshot – Illuminated Tokyo Station at night
Tokyo Station, the central railway terminal of Honshu island and the busiest station in Japan. Built in 1914, December 20th, this year marked its 102th anniversary. One of my reasons to visit Tokyo for the second time a month ago was to view the recently renovated West facade of the station, which is claimed to be one of the most beautiful station in Japan, and some compared it with the equally magnificent Amsterdam central station.
Some EXIF info: Captured with Nikon D7000 and Nikkor 18-105mm lens attached. Panorama image made from 3 separate images shot in Program Auto mode, with Shutter speed 1/6, 1/8 and 1/10 sec. Aperture f3.5. Focus distance was set to 18mm. Auto ISO 1600. Auto White Balance. No flash fired and No exposure value being compensated with Matrix metering.
When I was in Tokyo recently (view my Tokyo report), I went out at night, getting off the west exit of Tokyo station and fighting against the shivery temperature of just 3°C to really have a good look at the famous West facade of the station. The station was badly damaged during the World War II in the 40’s and temporarily rebuilt as a 2-storey structure after that until 5 years ago when the the local government decided to restore its original pre-war appearance.
Now the West facade of Tokyo station has been restored to its original 3-storey design with beautiful facing brick outlook that more like a western than a Japanese styled structure. Without setting out my tripod, I managed to take a few photo shots of the marvelously illuminated facade with different angle of view and stitched them up for a nice panorama image as you can see here.
This is the bigger image to show more details. Scroll it to the left to see the whole thing. Ideally, you can view the full resolution photo on my Flickr Photostream page.
